Nikon D40 Seems Cool

The other day I was at Target, I happen to be around the electronics/camera area and spotted the Nikon D40 on display. Popular Photography and a few other online sites have quite a few good things to say about it, so out of curiosity I picked it up and played with it for a bit.

Unfortunately, like most of the other cool electronics when you want to try it, the power cable to the Nikon D40 wasn’t functioning correctly, so I couldn’t power it on and test fire a few. But construction wise and ergonomically speaking, the D40 is very well built. It feels solid and not overly plastic feeling. The buttons press smoothly and quietly. It has a comfortable grip being that it is slightly smaller than the Canon XTi. I would almost venture to say that it is slightly better built than the Canon XTi, but without trying it for at least a week, I can’t accurately compare.

If I hadn’t made the switch from Nikon to Canon, I probably would seriously consider purchasing it as a secondary SLR because of its size. And from what I’ve been reading, it is actually better to get the Nikon D40 than it’s newer version, the Nikon D40x. For the reasons, read Ken Rockwell’s review.

  1. Yeah, his reviews are a reason why I haven’t upgraded my D50 yet. You ever sell your 50mm lens?

  2. Dennis,

I don’t know, the D40 is pretty cool. But the idea of having only 3 point focus seems limiting versus the D50’s 5 point focus, but I do like the portable size and how comfortable it is despite being so small.

The 50mm has been sold. You should get the 50mm f/1.4…
